RAGING BITCH: TERRIBLE NAME, GREAT BEER! 9/12/2009

The Bitch. Respect!

Raging Bitch: terrible name, great beer.

Flying Dog Brewery, the Frederick, Maryland, based speciality beer brewery which is so closely knit to Hunter S. Thompson releases a 20th anniversary ale.

The name comes from the hip-hop scene where it indicates a young woman who can't be toyed with and who knows how to 'stand her man'.

In creating this brew they spared nothing: one only celebrates one’s 20th once!

Famous as the brewery may be for its interpretation of classic European beer styles, to which it likes to give its own twist, it set its goal high: it should be an India Pale Ale, Belgian style. Why? Because.

This goal was achieved by using the yeast strain reserved for its seasonal Woody Creek White, a Belgian style witbier, to have its way on the wort normally used to produce Snake Dog India Pale Ale with.

This yeast strain, called El Diablo, (terrible name, great yeast strain) went crazy on the wort and this resulted in an incomprehensibly fruity and diabolically twisted brew that sends the senses on a roller-coaster ride.

Obviously American hops were used in abundance (Warrior, Centennial, Amarillo) and these give off their intense citrus flavors. But El Diablo went an extra step: Raging Bitch (terrible name, great beer) turned out to be enjoying an almost surreal palate, in tune with Hunter S. Thompson.

It has been described as a ‘breakfast’ beer because of its clear resemblance of freshly made grapefruit juice. The strength is at 8,3% ABV which makes it a powerful Bitch. Drinkability however is extreme, so much so the brewery calls it ‘deceptively drinkable' and those warning words aren’t there for fun.

Managing Director Ruurd Epema was presented with the first bottle in Europe and was overjoyed. He had no clue what to do with it though...

Whether the beer is here as an anniversary beer only remains to be seen: Raging Bitch (terrible name, great beer) could very well turn out to be a member of The Pack!

Raging Bitch (terrible name, great beer) is made available on both draught and bottle. For now it's just the 75 cl champagne-corked bottle but comes mid-January we'll also have the 355 ml longneck. See on the left: they have been bottled and packed. Please keep the Bitch cold - that'll please the brewery!

Surf there and see where we stole the 'terrible name, great beer' line. Zak Avery - thanks!

Labelling these bottles is done by hand and with love, as you can see...
