Weihenstephaner crystal wheat beer has won the gold medal at the Australian International Beer Awards (AIBA) in Melbourne for the third year in succession. To mark this exceptional achievement, the crystal wheat beer also received the Major Trophy in the “Consistency of Excellence” category for maintaining high quality standards during the last years.AIBA Winner 2017

The Weihenstephaner crystal wheat beer can look back on a long and successful history. Although the bright golden, lightly carbonated wheat beer has won prizes at AIBA every year since 2005, the gold medal in the “German Style Kristal” category for the third year in a row was the accolade! The crystal wheat beer with the fresh, citrussy tartness has convinced the jury of international experts – as well as beer lovers in its home town the city of Freising, Germany and all over the world.

But the crystal wheat beer was not the only Weihenstephaner beer to take the spotlight. The Weihenstephaner wheat beer also scooped a silver medal, while the wheat beer dark, the wheat beer bock “Vitus” and our bright lager “Original” each received Bronze.

Head brewmaster Tobias Zollo explains the procedure used by the panel of judges to reach their decision: “A blind tasting is held in which beers are assessed by the same criteria that are matter to beer lovers: appearance, aroma, head, colour and of course the taste. Independent international beer competitions are an excellent benchmark for us, giving us the opportunity to see how well our products are received throughout the world. We’re absolutely delighted to have won these awards.”

25 years ago AIBA was founded as an international competition with the aim of introducing a wider public to the extensive variety of different beers and flavours available. Today AIBA is the largest annual beer competition in the world; over 358 breweries from 36 countries enter almost 2.000 beers into the competition.
